The Homer Davis/Sam Sharpe essay and poster competition for primary and high schools will be launched on Wednesday, December 22 during the Sam Sharpe Lecture. The competition will give students an opportunity to apply their creative talents in expressing their views of Sam Sharpe through words and drawings. The winners of the competition will be announced and awarded during the annual Labour Day tribute honouring the National Hero in Sam Sharpe Square in May 2023.

This lecture will look at Sam Sharpe as a Baptist deacon and revolutionary leader and also the role he played in gaining freedom for Jamaicans. This event is a part of the annual staging of "Flames to Freedom". Flames to Freedom commemorates the anniversary of the 1831 Christmas Rebellion led by National Hero, the Right Excellent Samuel Sharpe in St. James. This year’s staging marks the 191st anniversary of the rebellion.
