Curfews and Quarantines

  • The curfew hours for weekdays and Saturdays will be 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning ending at 5 a.m. August 31, 2021.
  • For Sunday, the curfew will begin at 2 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. the following morning.
  • As of July 1, 2021, fully vaccinated persons now have the option of taking an approved PCR test and upon presenting a negative result, they can be released from the Quarantine Order. The test will be done at the individual’s own cost.
  • The quarantine requirement for fully vaccinated persons will remain at eight (8) days.
  • For persons who are not fully vaccinated, the quarantine period remains at 14 days.

General Protocols

  • The MOHW advises the wearing of facial barriers (masks) in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
  • Gatherings are restricted to a maximum of 10 persons. For any such gatherings, a physical distance of a minimum 6ft must be maintained. However, public entities may now hold events limited to handovers, launches, groundbreaking, or opening ceremonies, but there should be no more than 15 persons physically present, and the requirements to wear masks and maintain physical distance must apply.
  • Persons 60 years and older are required to work from home and otherwise, must stay home. They are however permitted to leave home once per day for medical care, food, exercise and other essentials of life.
  • Taxi operators must carry one less person than the maximum number of persons allowed to be carried under the relevant licence.
  • Drivers of public passenger vehicles will be given one hour before and after the curfew to leave their home and get to the destination of their first passenger and after dropping off their last passenger to go home.

Workplace and School Protocols

  • Establish policies and practices for social distancing.
  • Install and Maintain Effective Ventilation Systems.
  • Carry out regular environmental cleaning and disinfection.
  • Where an employer is informed that an employee is confirmed to have COVID-19 the Health Department should be immediately informed.
  • The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information has advised schools to focus on students preparing for exit exams at Grades 6, 11, 12 and 13. Other students should not be on the campuses and should be engaged through other established learning modalities.

Tourist Protocols

  • All persons travelling to Jamaica, including Jamaicans, must present a negative COVID-19 test within 72-hours prior to the travel date. Business travelers must present a pre-test result and will incur the cost of a PCR test after arrival in Jamaica.
  • Whether or not persons are required to be tested, they will be required to remain in quarantine at home for 14 days from their date of entry to Jamaica.
  • The Government has extended the travel ban to include India and Trinidad & Tobago, effective Wednesday, May 5, 2021, until June 2, 2021. The travel ban for South American countries, such as Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, and Paraguay, is also being extended until June 2, 2021

Religious Protocols

  • No more than 50 people are allowed to be in a church. 
  • No more than 30 people are allowed to attend a Funeral. Funerals must be in compliance with the Disaster Risk Management Act.
  • Weddings are allowed with a maximum of 50 persons including the officiating pastor, witnesses and wedding party.

Event Protocols

  • Small outdoor events such as concerts, parties, tailgate parties, round robins, launches, and festivals with the necessary permits will be allowed every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday between 6: 00 am and  10: 00 pm.
  • Applications for permits must be made to the municipal corporations at least 15 days before the date of the event.
  • A committee will be established at each municipal corporation to receive and review all applications. This committee will consist of officials from the corporations, the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Jamaica Fire Brigade, and the Ministry of Health.
  • A copy of any permit that is granted must be prominently displayed at the entrance of the venue, at least eight hours before the event is scheduled to begin. This is where members of the public can protect themselves by looking out for the permit.
  • All promotions for events must include COVID-19 protocols referring specifically to wearing of masks, sanitisation, and physical distancing. The promoters and patrons must observe government orders regarding closure before curfew times, sanitisation protocols, the physical distancing of at least six feet between individuals, the mandatory wearing of masks, and temperature checks, especially on entry.
  • The number of persons at the event at any time shall not exceed whichever is lower of 230 persons, with 200 being patrons and 30 being performers or event staff or such number as would, based on the square footage of the venue, ensure compliance with the physical distancing requirement.
  • There shall be audible public announcements every 15 minutes during the event, reminding patrons to wear masks when not drinking or eating and to observe physical distancing protocols.
  • Promoters or hosts of all events are required to give full access to designated officials from the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, Ministry of Health and Wellness, municipal corporations, and the Jamaica Constabulary Force. These officials will display proper identification.
  • Any person, venue and/or sound system found to be in breach of the permit granted will be barred for six months from obtaining a permit for entertainment events.
  • Any promoter, venue, sound system owner or operator who fails to comply with these protocols is liable on conviction to a maximum fine of $1 million and/or 12 months’ imprisonment under the Disaster Risk Management Act. 

Restaurant Protocols

  • Occupancy must not exceed 50 per cent of the capacity for each restaurant, and no more than four persons should be seated at a table.
  • Each table should be spaced at least six feet apart and none of the tables should be joined to facilitate large groups.
  • Restaurant operators must allow entry to personnel from the Local Government Ministry, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Ministry of Health and Wellness, who will be monitoring the operations of restaurants to ensure that they are compliant with the stated guidelines.

Closures

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Hon. Olivia Grange, has announced the closure of cultural and sports facilities. This is in keeping with the Government’s strategy to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Jamaica and to minimize the potential health impact on the country.

Vaccine FAQ

1) Who manufactures COVID-19 vaccines?

COVID-19 vaccines are being manufactured by several companies including Moderna, Serum Institute of India, and AstraZeneca. Jamaica will have access to vaccines on the WHO emergency use listing through the COVAX Facility. The CPVID-19 vaccine made by AstraZeneca is the second vaccine on the WHO Emergency Use List and more suitable for the storage conditions in the country.

2) Who will receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the first phase?

- Health Care Workers
- Non-Health Care Frontline Workers
- Parliamentarians
- Infirmary and Nursing Homes
- Penal Institutions
- Elderly (Over 60)

3) Why will the COVID-19 vaccine from Astrazeneca be used?

- It offers a good level of protection against COVID-19.
- Most side effects are mild to moderate in severity and are gone within a few days.

4) The most common side effects of COVID-19 vaccines are:

- pain and tenderness at the injection site
- headache 
- tiredness
- muscle pain
- general feeling of being unwell
- chills 
- fever
- joint pain
- nausea

5) How will the COVID-19 vaccine from Astrazeneca be administered?

COVID-19 vaccine is given as two injections, usually into the muscle of the upper arm.

6) Can people who have already had COVID-19 be vaccinated?

Yes, persons who have had COVID-19 should take the vaccine. We are unsure of how long persons who have had COVID-19 are immune to the infection.

7) How long does protection from COVID-19 vaccines last?

It is not currently known how long protection given by COVID-19 vaccines last. The people vaccinated in the clinical trials will continue to be followed for one year to gather more information on the duration of protection.
