Guaiacum officinale is Jamaica’s national flower. Its Latin name means “wood of life.” It is native to the West Indies and continental tropical America. It has neatly arranged leaves, blue flowers and produces an orange fruit. It grows well in dry woodlands along the north and south coast of Jamaica. The Lignum Vitae has medicinal properties and the wood is used for furniture, mallets and police batons.
