A hybrid of an orange and a tangerine, the fruit got its name from (Or)ange + (tan)gerine + un(ique). It was developed by David Daniel Phillips (a Jamaican from Manchester) and was presented to the Board of the Jamaica Agricultural Society on March 1, 1939. The ortanique is large, has a glossy rather than matte and dull appearance, turns orange-yellow when ripe and has around 10 to 12 segments.
