A village at the mouth of the Kingston Harbour, Port Royal is an important historical site. Founded in 1518 by the Spanish, it was once a shipping and commerce centre. During the1692 earthquake it was significantly destroyed. Hurricanes have also regularly damaged it. Today it is a fishing town and now has a floating pier where cruise ships dock.
