Stinking Toe

Price Range:

Also known as the Locust fruit, and scientifically Hymenaea courbail, the stinking toe is a legume in the Fabaceae family that grows on the West Indian Locust tree. The flesh is a powdery creamy white colour, encased in a very hard shell. Its name comes from its unpleasant odour and its big toe shape. Although the smell is not great, it is described as tasting like dried milk with hints of parmesan cheese and herbs. Stinking toe is rich in carbohydrates, iron, calcium and vitamin A and antioxidants. The fruit is also said to be an aphrodisiac, an appetite enhancer and a galactagogue (promoting milk production in lactating mothers).
