Guess what’s coming soon? No, not another hurricane! It’s your old favorite New Year’s resolutions! You know, those promises you make to yourself that you hardly keep. The number of us who stick to those resolutions is abysmally low! Did we take that diet seriously? How about that carefully mapped out self-improvement plan? Remember that gym membership we promised we’d get? The year is almost over, so those of us who stayed on track, should celebrate! But those among us who haven’t, must start building accountability for next year’s resolutions.
Setting goals helps create the life we want. Without accountability, however, even our best intentions remain just that—intentions. Accountability is the force that keeps us committed, structured, and motivated to reach our objectives. It’s the line that stands between merely wishing for success and actively working toward it. When we hold ourselves accountable, we turn intentions into actions and clear the path to success. These are lessons we as Jamaicans must learn.
To start being more accountable, we need to wheel and come again! Here are some ways to do that:
Set Clear and Specific Goals- This narrows what we want and helps to develop a focused strategy. Promising to eat healthy is a broad goal. Instead, saying we want to cut carbs or eat more protein is specific, realistic, and gives a clear objective.
Track Progress- Results may not always be visible right away, but regular check-ins can keep us on track and help us stay accountable for our goals. Tracking progress also provides motivation by showing how far we've come.
Be Open to Feedback- Constructive criticism strengthens our accountability. An extra set of eyes or ears can catch things we may have missed, bringing valuable insights that support our growth. Welcoming feedback shows a willingness to improve and that we embrace growth.
With these clear strategies, the benefits are rewarding! Accountability builds self-awareness, helps us make intentional decisions, and can even strengthen relationships.
Holding ourselves accountable is essential in all areas of life. Don’t leave anything to chance. Embrace responsibilities and pave a path to success.
