The Simón Bolívar Cultural Centre will be celebrating the liberator (Simón Bolívar), who fought
vigorously for the freedom of oppressed countries such as Venezuela,,Colombia, Ecuador, Peru,
Panama and Bolivia. These countries owe their freedom and historical culture to the Liberator's
ideas and determination.

Simón Bolívar's most reputed work was written while he was exiled here in Jamaica - The Carta
de Jamaica (Jamaica Letter) which he completed on September 6, 1815. On September 30, 2021
at 10:00am we will be celebrating the 206th Anniversary of the Jamaica Letter (Carta de
Jamaica).

This year's focus is on “The Role of Language in The Integration of The Caribbean and Latin
American Countries.” The event will be a virtual one, hosted via Zoom and will take the form of
a presentation followed by a question and answer session. Presenter: Charlene Wilkinson,
Lecturer in the Department of Language & Cultural Studies, University of Guyana.

Simón Bolívar Cultural Centre is an arm of the Programmes Coordination Division of the Institute
of Jamaica, which is an agency of the Ministry of Culture Gender Entertainment & Sport. The
Centre’s mandate is to foster Latin American and Caribbean integration. This is done via the
teaching of Latin Culture through tours/ exhibitions such as the one now being hosted on his life
and legacy Simón Bolívar. In addition to the exhibition, adults and children alike, can indulge in
various aspects of Latin Culture such as Latin Dance, Music and Spanish Language classes offered
by the Centre.

Do not adopt the best system of government, but the one that is most likely to succeed.
-- Simon Bolivar, Letter from Jamaica, September 6, 1815
