Wed, November 10 - 9:15am

As part of its advocacy role, Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) UWI, Mona, will host a Virtual Public Forum under the theme Equity for Local Investors in Jamaica which will explore the treatment of local versus foreign investors. The forum is slated for Wednesday, November 10, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will be hosted on the Zoom platform. The Forum will take the format of a series of short presentations followed by a question and answer session led by a moderator.

It can be argued that there seems to be a discriminatory treatment of local vs. foreign investors that penalizes the local, even at the Government policy levels. During the FINSAC case years ago, the then Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, Don Wehby supported the concept of a Junior Stock Exchange with specific tax incentives. During that period, many foreign investors, listed and unlisted, have received tax incentives and exemptions regardless of their domicile, while the local investor buys with taxable income and pays 15% tax at source on dividends. For the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), small investors are paying 15% at source taxes on dividends yet receive less in their retirement years due to currency devaluations and inflation. The off-shore investors pay out in US dollars to a much lower off-shore environment. As a result, this has called into question, ‘Why should a Jamaican invest in the Local Stock Market?’
We look forward to having you join us.
