Reparations and Royalty

The Centre for Reparation Research, in collaboration with the CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, has invited a delegation of African royalty from AIDO Network International to visit Jamaica from 28 February – 6 March 2023, to mark the 75th anniversary of the University and the 10th anniversary of the CRC.

Among the activities being planned to mark these milestones is a Symposium titled “Reparations and Royalty, Africa and Europe: Exploding Myths and Empowering Truths,” which will be held on Thursday 2 March 2023, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm (Jamaica time) in the Eon Nigel Harris Council Room at the Regional Headquarters of The UWI.

UWI alumni, students and staff are specially invited to this unique and noteworthy event, as well as the general public. The Centre for Reparation Research, the CARICOM Reparations Commission and the Vice-Chancellor, would very much like you to join in person for the event, as Kings and Queens from the African continent are welcomed for meaningful discussions.

CAPRI to Launch study on Growthless Jobs

Why has recent employment growth not resulted in commensurate increases in Gross Domestic Product? The Caribbean Policy Research Institute (CAPRI) sought to explore possible explanation for this in its latest study titled “Growthless Jobs: The Paradox of Rising Employment and Stagnant Output.” Join us for the online report launch and panel discussion on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, from 8pm to 9pm GMT-5.

Lead Researcher, Mr. Ronaldo Blake, will deliver a presentation that investigates the nature of the jobs created, and explore possible explanations for the unrealized economic growth and falling productivity. Following the presentation, Dr. Damien King, Executive Director of CAPRI, will moderate a panel discussion where he will be joined by the lead researcher and Ms. Diane Edwards, Director of MSBM Consulting.

The Universal Service Fund (USF) provides Free Community Wi-Fi designed to increase internet access to unserved, under-served, and rural communities to facilitate greater digital inclusion. The goal of the project is to provide 189 Free community Wi-Fi Hotspots across the island. The Universal Service Fund, an Agency of the Ministry of Science, Energy, and Technology, is mandated to provide internet connectivity and increase the use of ICT devices across the country. The USF achieves its mandate through the execution of strategic projects such as free community wi-fi that benefit Jamaicans across a plethora of sectors.
