The Natural History Museum of Jamaica (NHMJ), a division of the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ), in collaboration with Bat Conservation International (BCI) and the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), opens a new exhibition entitled “Guardians of the Night: Celebrating Jamaica’s Remarkable Bats.” The exhibition launches on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in the Lecture Hall and Discovery Room of the Institute of Jamaica, Downtown Kingston, and will be open to the public starting Thursday, June 19, 2025.
This public exhibition explores the secret lives of Jamaica’s bats—some of the most ecologically important yet misunderstood creatures on the island. With 21 bat species, including five found nowhere else on Earth and eight others limited to the Caribbean, Jamaica holds the highest bat endemism in the region. These mammals play essential roles as pollinators, seed dispersers, and insect controllers.

The National Environment and Planning Agency will commemorate International Plastic Bag-Free Day on Thursday, July 3, with a youth-focused outreach initiative to promote sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.
A NEPA team will visit the Annie Dawson Home for Children in Kingston, where children will join a creative no-sew workshop, transforming old T-shirts into reusable cloth bags. The workshop will address the environmental harm caused by single-use plastic bags and the critical need for sustainable alternatives.
“To be held under the theme ‘Bag the Change – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse’, International Plastic Bag-Free Day is a vital opportunity to increase public awareness of the harmful effects of plastics on the environment and promote alternatives that are reusable and environmentally friendly,” NEPA’s Johnil Morgan told JIS News. Johnil is the Environmental Management Systems Officer in its Pollution Prevention Branch.
Morgan says Jamaica’s efforts to reduce single-use plastic waste are guided by the Plastic Packaging Materials Prohibition Order. The Order’s latest iteration came into effect in 2024.
NEPA’s participation in the workshop is part of its mission to reduce plastic pollution with sustained public education and the enforcement of environmental policies.

Urban Dialogues: Imagining Kingston’s Futures brings together a wide range of voices—academics, activists, artists, government officials, and private sector representatives—to engage in thoughtful conversations about the city’s present challenges and future possibilities.
Through three interconnected roundtables on imagination, infrastructure, and housing, participants will explore the complex socio-spatial divides shaping Kingston today and consider how collective visions can inform more inclusive and equitable urban futures.
The event may also include a visit to Coronation Market, offering an opportunity to ground these discussions in one of the city’s most complex and contested public spaces.
