Exhibition: New Routes: threads across space and time
Venue: Mitchell Art Gallery, Edmonton
Dates: September 19 – December 6, 2025
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 18, 6:00–8:00 p.m., Mitchell Art Gallery

Starting September 19, four artists of Jamaican heritage will exhibit at the Mitchell Art Gallery in Edmonton, Canada, under the theme:  New Routes: threads across space and time. Raneece Buddan, AJA Louden, Garfield Morgan, and Elsa Robinson met each other in Edmonton’s Treaty 6 territory. For nine months, they explored themes of diaspora, Jamaican culture, African heritage, and reclamation of their history, which resulted in the show.

The works in New Routes include painting, ceramics, sculpture, fibre, and textiles, with one standout piece created collectively by all four artists in dialogue. Writer Yaniya Lee developed an essay alongside the artists that offers viewers another entry point into the conversations and ideas at the heart of the show.

New Routes highlights the resilience and creativity of diasporic communities and how heritage is continually reinterpreted across time and place.

The exhibition will be open till December 6.

Sat, November 08 - 12:00am

On November 8 and 9, 2025, Jamaica will play host to SoundAtopia, a groundbreaking two-day music festival designed to unite a diverse range of genres, including Amapiano, Afrobeats, R&B, reggae, and dancehall.

Set against the scenic backdrop of Plantation Cove in St Ann, SoundAtopia promises an unforgettable celebration of music and culture. The line-up features international heavyweights such as Jermaine Dupri and 2 Chainz, alongside Jamaican icons like Bounty Killer, ensuring a blend of global sounds with local roots.

While Kingston has long been a hub for Jamaican music, St Ann was chosen as the festival’s home for its accessibility and breathtaking scenery, making it easier for visitors from Negril, Montego Bay, and beyond to take part.

The excitement around SoundAtopia has already attracted international acts eager to perform on Jamaican soil.

With its fusion of genres, star-studded line-up, and mission to pay homage to Jamaica’s musical legacy, SoundAtopia is set to redefine the island’s festival experience and draw music lovers into an immersive journey across sound and culture.
