Hope Gardens, formally named the Royal Botanical Gardens, is located on Hope Road in Kingston. The gardens were established in 1873 and were named after Major Richard Hope, the first British owner of the land. Historically, in 1881, 81 hectares (200 acres) was bought by the government for experimental planting of foreign species. Today, Hope Gardens is one of Jamaica’s first public parks perfect for quiet relaxation, picnicking or sightseeing. The park is adjoined to Hope Zoo which is home to a diverse group of animals.
