Preeminent jazz innovator Steve Turre, for F&B Stage
"One of the world’s preeminent jazz innovators, trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre, has consistently won both the Readers’ and Critics’ polls in JazzTimes, Downbeat, and Jazziz for Best Trombone and for Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (shells)".
The Mexican-American musician who grew up in the San Francisco Bay and absorbed daily mariachi, blues, and jazz will be the special featured soloist at Friday Night's F&B downtown jazz. Steve’s accomplishments over his sixty-year career distinguish his contribution to the continuing appeal of jazz as an art form of individual creativity, collective play, and spontaneity.
Steve's career accomplishments are a dream textbook for any aspiring young musician's inspiration. As noted by his biography, Steve "is an American jazz trombonist and a pioneer of using seashells as instruments, a composer, arranger, and educator at the collegiate-conservatory level. He has been active in jazz, rock, and Latin jazz for sixty-one years – in live venues, recording studios, television, and cinema production."
Steve is among the world's most prolific living jazz trombonists, with over 20 albums as a bandleader, appearances on many more as a sideman and studio musician, and membership in the Saturday Night Live band since 1985.
In 1968, Turre played with Rahsaan Roland Kirk. 1970, he recorded with Carlos Santana; in 1972, he toured with Ray Charles. He appeared in Jamaica with the master trumpeter Woody Shaw at Herbie Miller's Blue Monk Jazz Gallery in 1982, recorded with Monty Alexander in 1996 on To the Ends of the Earth and in 1999 on Stir It Up: The Music of Bob Marley.
Steve has taught jazz trombone at the Manhattan School of Music since 1988. For fifty-four years (since 1970), Turre has been a guru of seashells—conch in particular—mainly collected during his travels to Jamaica and elsewhere. Turre has long experience with Latin bands and is a skilled cowbell and Venezuelan maracas player.
Reviews of Steve's performances often describe his playing as charming, witty, and imaginative, with light-handed glissandos, mercurial arpeggios, and poetic revelation. His unique sound, a blend of melodic magnificence and daring innovation, is sure to captivate jazz enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
The Super Trio of Orville Hammons on Piano, Leon Duncan on bass, Clayon Samuels on drums, and the in-demand tenor saxophonist Oshane Love will accompany the trombonist.
